I personally have a problem with existing journal apps not being the best app for me to capture my spiritual journey and also either demanding an account from day one or quietly sending content to a server. The goal was a journal that works entirely on the device by default and also helps me document my spiritual experience.
I built a mobile-first PWA with all data stored locally in IndexedDB via Dexie, with no backend at all in R1. Entries cover revelations (dreams, visions, impressions, prophetic words, scripture, and custom types), prayers with dated status updates, and daily moods. A faithfulness wall resurfaces answered prayers and fulfilled revelations over time. One verse from the Berean Standard Bible each day, same verse all day, pulled from a bundled dataset so it works offline. App lock via passkey or PIN. In R2, cloud backup was added, and content is encrypted on-device before it ever leaves; the server only ever sees ciphertext and holds none of the key.
User data stays local by default; the user controls export, import, and deletion. Cloud backup in R2 is additive, and the export button stays prominent. We test it as carefully as the save path, because backup isn't a substitute for a copy you hold yourself.
